Meteorology!

Overview of Internship

For my internship, I worked with Travis Koshko, lead meteorologist of CBS 19 Weather. I job shadowed him and learned about meteorology and informing the public for around 12 hours. I went to his office and he showed me a few things, for example: What websites they use, how they get their data, how they use that data to create graphics and eventually inform the public about the weather that is happening in the world. We also looked at recognizing tornados from Berlyn New York and other images.

For my 2nd internship, I worked with Dominique Smith, meteorologist at NBC29 weather station. I job shadowed her for around 10 hours. At the weather station, I learned how NBC29 looks at the NOAA website and other graphics to determine possibilities of what could happen, and then they put it on graphics and write up stories about it, eventually presenting it to the public. I also got to practice doing a weather segment myself while there.

Overview of Community Service

For my community service, I worked with Jala Tyler and helped the community called Leap. I worked with Jala and helped to make marketing and to help spread the word about the non-profit company. I made things like post cards event lists as well as calling people about their experience to help out as much as I could while volunteering there. I also made a list of schools and an example email for Leap to contact schools about some energy presentations.

Overview of Research

For my research, I looked at "How Climate Change Effects Extreme Weather Events". I wanted to look at this topic because looking at a big topic like Climate Change and how it affects these weather events that we have seen getting worse in recent times is very interesting. In my research, I found a few things about what Climate Change causes, and exactly some preventative measures to help make it less hurtful to humans and other species overall.
